Adding and subtracting are foundational to student achievement in math. Unfortunately some students have difficulty using word pictures or images in their thinking to help themselves add or subtract numbers. One way to assist students that have difficulty with this skill is to help them make sense of each number’s value. Students can develop decomposing skills (5=4+1, 5=2+3, 5=2+2+1.) Identify the value of a number in a number line. Understand that a digit can match a given set of objects. Students who practice this skills are building a foundation that will make math more automatic in the years to come.
